Gittleman Properties provide Urban
Habitat for Peregrine Falcons
With the help of the Raptor Resource Project, Gittleman employees are part of an effort to the bring Peregrine Falcons back to the banks of the upper Mississippi.
Early in 2008 Board members approved the installation of a roof top nesting box which became home to a falcon nesting pair, Gypsy and Frisco. Once on the endangered species list (due to high levels of DDT in the environment) Falcons, Bald Eagles and other raptors are making a comeback.
This spring, residents welcomed three hatchlings–Zues, Longfellow and Leone–whose names where chosen by random drawing from over 400 entries submitted by residents. The hatchlings have been banded and entered into the Midwest Peregrine Falcon Database.
Video from cameras mounted in the nesting box is recorded and replayed in the lobby so that residents can observe the Falcons without disturbing them. Thanks to Building Maintenance Engineer Randy Mata for providing footage of the Falcons, who earn their keep by helping Randy manage the local Pigeon population.
